Import a Car from Japan to Kenya: Auction, Export and Eligibility Checks

Japan is a common source market for Kenyan used cars, but “Japan import” does not tell you the exact trim, condition or ownership history. Before paying, match the chassis number to the export records, verify the first-registration date and confirm the vehicle’s actual steering position.

KRA says standard used imports must be right-hand drive and less than eight years old from the year of first registration. The current KEBS contractor list includes Japan for pre-export inspection. Confirm the vehicle’s inspection certificate, document route and current age cutoff with the appointed agent before shipping.

How should you check a Japanese auction car?

Request the original auction sheet, a complete translation, the invoice, export or deregistration record and dated photos of the VIN/chassis number and condition. Match mileage, grade, damage notes and repair markings across the records. Auction-sheet formats and grading practices vary, so ask the exporter to explain the exact marks rather than treating a single grade as a mechanical guarantee.

  • Confirm the VIN/chassis number on the car matches every sale and export document.
  • Trace earlier ownership if the car was previously registered outside Japan; the seller’s country may not be its original market.
  • Have an independent inspector check the body, underside, suspension, tyres, warning lights and repair areas.
  • Verify engine, trim and equipment from the model/chassis code instead of relying on a translated advert.
  • For a hybrid, request a diagnostic report for the battery and hybrid system.

Auction grades are not mechanical test results. Ask for the original sheet and the grading legend used by that auction house, including the meaning of marks for repairs, corrosion or damage. Compare it with high-resolution photos and request a translation from someone familiar with the auction format if a note is unclear.

Check mileage entries and repair notes against service records. If the sheet is incomplete, unclear or inconsistent with the vehicle photos, pause the purchase until the exporter resolves the discrepancy in writing.

Before bidding, ask for written buyer or broker fees, inland transport to port, inspection and export-handling charges. Confirm which amount is refundable if the car cannot be shipped and which fees are due if a sale is cancelled. Keep those charges separate from Kenyan import costs.

Ask the exporter when the KEBS-appointed pre-export inspection can be completed and when the certificate will be issued. A bid slip or Japanese export record does not replace the Kenyan roadworthiness process.

How do you confirm Kenya eligibility and landed cost?

Have a licensed clearing agent and the KEBS-appointed inspector confirm right-hand drive, age based on first registration, required inspection, document validation and the current certificate for the exact VIN. Review the current KRA motor-vehicle procedure and KEBS inspection-country list. A Japanese auction grade is not a Kenyan import approval.

Request a dated itemized quote using the exact model code, engine, first-registration date, sale invoice, auction/export charges, inland transport, freight and insurance. Keep taxes and valuation assumptions, inspection, port, clearing and registration separate. Compare that total with a similar vehicle already listed in the SilverTorque inventory; country-level freight or tax figures cannot replace a VIN-specific estimate.

Where can SilverTorque help?

If you are considering a specific Japanese vehicle, contact SilverTorque or WhatsApp the team with the VIN and available auction/export records before making a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Can an auction grade serve as a complete inspection?

No. It is one record to review. Verify the translation, physical condition, mileage, export papers and Kenyan eligibility independently.

What if the car’s auction sheet and VIN photos disagree?

Stop and ask the exporter to explain the mismatch in writing. Do not pay or ship until the vehicle identity and records are reconciled.
