Can You Import a Honda Fit from Malaysia to Kenya?

Yes, a Honda Fit exported from Malaysia can be imported into Kenya if the specific vehicle meets Kenya’s import rules. Before paying a deposit, confirm its steering position, first-registration date, inspection route and paperwork. A car being listed in Malaysia does not by itself prove it is eligible.

Can a Honda Fit from Malaysia meet Kenya’s import rules?

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) says an imported vehicle must be right-hand drive, comply with KS 1515, and be less than eight years old from the year of first registration. Check the registration date on the original documents, then confirm the vehicle will still qualify on the expected shipment date. Do not rely only on the model year in an online listing.

Check the exact vehicle, not just the badge. Ask for the VIN or chassis number, registration record and clear photographs of the steering wheel and identification plate. Some cars registered in Malaysia may have been imported there from another market. Confirm the car’s original market, model code and specification against its documents and inspection records.

What KEBS inspection applies to a vehicle exported from Malaysia?

KEBS currently lists Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, the UAE and the UK under its used-vehicle inspection arrangement with QISJ. Malaysia is not on that list. KEBS guidance for vehicles exported from countries without a motor-vehicle inspection arrangement provides for destination inspection in Kenya. The published fee is 0.6% of customs value or USD 265, whichever is higher. Confirm the route and current charge with KEBS or your licensed clearing agent before shipment, since requirements and fees can change.

Do not book shipping on the assumption that a general product inspection certificate covers a used car. Ask in writing which inspection documents the specific vehicle needs and when inspection must take place.

What should you check before paying the seller?

  • Match the VIN or chassis number on the vehicle to its registration and sale documents.
  • Confirm the first-registration date, right-hand-drive layout, ownership and export or deregistration paperwork.
  • Arrange an independent inspection. Check the body structure, signs of accident or flood damage, odometer consistency, engine, transmission, warning lights and service history. For a hybrid Fit, request a battery-health assessment.
  • Ask whether the vehicle has outstanding finance or restrictions on transfer, and get proof that the seller can legally export it.
  • Use a written purchase agreement that identifies the vehicle by VIN and states the price, condition and delivery terms.

Which costs and documents belong in your import plan?

Build a landed-cost estimate around the exact VIN and specification. Include the purchase price, Malaysian inland and export charges, freight and insurance, customs value and taxes assessed by KRA, KEBS destination inspection if applicable, port handling, clearing-agent fees, local delivery and registration. Ask for an itemised estimate; old online price tables cannot reliably predict today’s assessment.

KRA lists the original commercial invoice, original cancelled logbook or registration record, original bill of lading, inspection certificate and importer’s KRA PIN among the supporting documents. Because Malaysia follows the destination-inspection route in current KEBS guidance, have your clearing agent confirm exactly which inspection certificate and export papers will be accepted for your vehicle before it is loaded.

If the car will travel in a container, ask the shipper or freight forwarder to confirm the Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) reference required by KRA for containerised cargo and that it is shown on the bill of lading. Check the KRA ACD portal for current instructions.

Questions buyers ask about importing from Malaysia

Is a Honda Fit from Malaysia automatically right-hand drive?

No. Verify the actual vehicle’s steering position before purchase. KRA requires imported cars to be right-hand drive.

Will the car be inspected before shipping?

KEBS’s current used-vehicle contractor list does not include Malaysia. Its guidance for countries without a vehicle-inspection arrangement provides for destination inspection. Confirm the applicable process with KEBS or your clearing agent before booking freight.
